| Birding - California's Central Coast - July 8 - 2008 - I can't believe how far behind I am in birding. Well, I am back in the groove. Checked out the Cloisters Pond and Park. First birds I saw were two Tricolored Blackbirds among a flock of Red-winged Blackbirds. In the reeds around the pond were numerous Black-crowned Night Herons, a Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, and Grackles. The Grackles are much calmer now that the mating season is winding down. The usual birds were in the dunes, Spotted Towhee, House Finch, Am. Goldfinch, Bushtits. Walked out to the beach - 40 Long-billed Curlew - most were sleeping. Perhaps they had just arrived. Herrmann's Gulls and lots of Surf Scoters. Brown Pelicans and Double-crested Cormorants. Did not see an Plovers. |
| Birding - California's Central Coast - June 25 - 2008 - Cloister's Pond - Morro Bay - Male Grackles chasing females. Most amusing and noisy. Five otters in the Morro Bay Channel. Quiet around the rock except for Gulls and Cormorants. |
Birding - California's Central Coast - June 22 -
2008 - Morro Strand State Beach - North Point - Very Low Tide - wonderful
for observing the tidepool critters. Four Mature Black-crowned Night
Herons feeding in the surf and one Great Egret. Caspian and
Royal Tern passing by. Small clusters of Herrmann's Gull at surf's
edge. Exquisite morning.![]() |
| Birding - California's Central Coast - June 17 - 2008 - Bald Eagles still at Whale Rock Reservoir. Along Cottonwood Creek Road observed - Black Phoebes and their nest - Bluebirds - Lesser Goldfinch - Ash-throated Flycatcher - Hooded Oriole - A yellowish House Finch and lots of regular house finch. At Morro Bay St. Park by the maintenance sheds - Heard the male Grosbeak and saw the female - Hooded Oriole - a woodpecker (did not get a good look) I think I saw a female Western Tanager. Sky had an orange cast do to wildfires to the north. |
Birding - California's Central Coast - June 11- 2008 -
Just arrived back in town from a road trip to Wa. State. Most
memorable bird was a Black-throated Gray Warbler and must not forget the
Bald Eagles. This morning took a 2 hour walk around Baywood, mostly on
Pasadena Ave. and 3rd St. Saw 30 species. Best Birds were Royal
Tern, nesting Hooded Oriole, 7 Black-necked Stilts off of the Audubon
Overlook at the end of 4th., numerous feeding While Pelicans, flock of
Chestnut-backed Chickadees (noisy and precious). In several areas the
Bewick's Wren was carrying on. Such a cheeky little darling.
Tomorrow will check out North Morro Strand and the "Rock."![]() |

| Birding - California's Central Coast - April 28 - 2008 -
Cottonwood Creek Rd. Area above Whale Rock Reservoir. Linda and
I went for the Bald Eagles. We watched them sitting in an oak tree for
about an hour. A bit to far for my camera to capture a good image.
Then we drove into the Canyon about 3 or 4 miles. Had good sightings
of Ah-throated Flycatcher, Bullock's Oriole, West. Kingbird, Acorn
Woodpecker, Tree and Cliff Swallow, and had great views of the Eagles
soaring. Thrilling to know there are Bald Eagles on the Central Coast. Questions or comments? Send an e to docentjoyce at yahoo dot com
Believe it or not two eagles are roosting in the center oak. |
